Up in the Air!

My name is Alexa Young

A little preparation goes a long way at 35,000 feet

  • Dress in layers. Cabin temperatures can range from tropical to arctic — sometimes during the same flight.

  • Bring an empty water bottle through security. Fill it once you're airside rather than continually buying bottled water.

  • Download movies, books, podcasts, music, maps, hotel information and anything else you might want before boarding. Never assume the Wi-Fi will work.

  • Keep a tiny “seat kit.” Headphones, charging cable, lip balm, eye mask, tissues and anything else you'll want during the flight can go into one small pouch. Then you aren't repeatedly opening the overhead bin.

  • Don't rely on the seat-back USB port. It may be slow, broken or nonexistent. Arrive with your phone charged and carry a permitted power bank.

  • Keep medications in your carry-on. And bring more than the exact number you'll need. Travel delays happen; CDC similarly recommends bringing enough prescription and OTC medicine for the trip plus extra for delays, particularly on cruises.

  • Set your watch to your destination time. On long-haul trips, start thinking in your destination's time zone once you board. Adjusting meals and sleep accordingly can make the transition easier.

  • Don't spend the entire flight sitting still. On longer flights, periodically get up, stretch and move around when it's safe to do so.
