Sometimes the journey really IS part of the adventure!

• Don't automatically fly between cities. Once you include airport transfers, security and waiting time, a city-centre-to-city-centre train can sometimes be faster — and far more enjoyable.

• Research whether train tickets need validation. Buying a ticket isn't always enough. In some transit systems, passengers must validate or activate it before boarding.

• Save your destination before getting into a taxi. Have the exact address on your phone and, when useful, in the local language.

• Check the last train home. Particularly when taking day trips. A beautiful little village becomes considerably less charming when the final train departed 20 minutes ago.

• Don't over-plan driving days. A four-hour Google Maps route rarely remains four hours once you've stopped for photographs, lunch and that intriguing roadside castle.
