Stay smart, stay confident, and enjoy the journey

• Make copies of important documents. Keep copies separately from the originals and leave another set with someone you trust. U.S. State Department guidance also recommends keeping photos of travel documents on your phone.

• Don't carry your passport everywhere unless you need to. Where legally appropriate and when a passport isn't required for the day's activity, consider securing it in your accommodation and carrying another acceptable form or copy of identification. Check local rules first.

• Use your hotel safe intelligently. Passports, backup cards and emergency cash shouldn't all be wandering around town with you.

• Be cautious with public Wi-Fi. Avoid accessing sensitive financial accounts over unsecured networks. Use your cellular connection or another trusted connection when possible.

• Don't advertise an empty home. Consider waiting until you've returned before publicly posting every detail of your trip in real time.

• Know the local emergency number.
  It isn't 911 everywhere. Check official travel advisories before leaving.

• Look at entry requirements, local laws, health information and current safety guidance for your destination.
